Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), requested permission to appear in court via video link on Wednesday owing to “security threats” before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The former premier, who is now charged in the Toshakhana (gift depository) case, asked to attend the session via video call out of security reasons in a petition submitted through attorney Faisal Chaudhry.

He furthered that court proceedings were also postponed owing to security issues.

The petition argued that Imran should be granted “tight security” if he is to appear in courts in the federal capital.

Imran proposed holding all hearings in the courthouse and demanded that “complete security” be provided by the police at all times when he appeared in court.

It’s important to remember that the trial court hearing the Toshakhana reference is located in F8, which is 30 minutes away from the courthouse.

The petition also requested that security be provided for on the freeway stretch.

Imran has consistently declined to appear before the district and sessions court in the Toshakhana case against him, citing security risks. Imran was injured during an assassination attempt in Wazirabad last year.

He is accused of falsifying the information in his asset declarations on the gifts he had kept from the Toshakhana.

The IHC temporarily lifted the non-bailable arrest warrants against the former prime minister issued by the trial court in the Toshakhana matter by March 13 and granted temporary respite to him the day before.

Imran must appear before the district and sessions courts on the same day, according to the IHC’s directive.
