On Sunday in ISLAMABAD, President Dr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed their dedication to preserving the rights of workers and expanding access to the advantages of economic growth for all citizens.

Both Alvi and Shehbaz, in their own remarks, lauded the workers’ gallant fight for basic rights and the crucial role they play in the country’s economic growth.

On Monday (today), Pakistan, along with the rest of the globe, will celebrate International Labor Day to honor the workers who sacrificed their lives on May 1, 1886, in Chicago for the recognition of their rights.

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated annually on May 1 to draw attention to workers’ issues and honor their achievements. In Pakistan, organizers from various labor groups have devised commemorative events to mark the day.

“We believe that workers and employers are partners in the production process and that their cooperation is essential for industrial efficiency that ultimately leads to socio-economic uplift of the country,” Alvi stated in his statement on the eve of May Day.

Alvi pointed out the various problems that workers in the country face, including unsafe working conditions, discriminatory labor practices, low earnings, insecurity in the workplace (especially for women), excessively long work hours, and arbitrary dismissal.

As he put it, “our economy and it is highly essential to take steps for the protection of their rights” by strictly implementing the labor laws to deter unfair labor practices would be nothing without the hardworking people who make them possible.

I appeal on all Pakistani employees to do their part in bolstering the country’s economy so that Pakistan can thrive. Employers should do what they can to safeguard workers’ rights and promote their well-being, he added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed the government’s dedication to spreading the fruits of economic growth across the board and into the lives of all citizens, especially the country’s hardworking labor force, in a separate message.

“The day symbolizes the sanctity and dignity of labor and at the same time is an acknowledgment of the importance of workers and laborers for being central to the economic growth of the country,” he said.

The prime minister issued a renewed call for all parties concerned to commit to improving the lives of the working class via social and economic investment.

“The rights of employees must be respected, and hard effort must be rewarded, if society is to advance. “These are basic human rights that Islam has recognized long before there were any labor laws,” he continued.

The prime minister pledged that the current administration will endeavor to enhance the lives of employees by enhancing their access to higher quality housing, education, and healthcare.

Workers’ minimum wages were raised to Rs25,000 per month in light of high inflation rates and other economic challenges, he said, and the government had also launched vocational training and skills development programs to ensure that workers could compete fairly in the job market.
