ISLAMABAD — Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Wednesday that climate change and the recent flooding in Punjab were topical issues following the devastating floods across the country in 2022.

According to a press release released by the PPP, former foreign minister Bilawal made these comments through video link while speaking at a conference on “The Urgency of Action: Climate Change and its implications on Human Rights in Pakistan.”

As Chairman Bilawal put it, “while we represent our party,” the problems at hand are too big for any one political group to solve alone. “All the people who call Pakistan home can identify with them, and in many respects, so can people all across the world.

Sadly, he said, “Pakistan is an epicentre of the climate crisis,” citing the catastrophic melting of polar glaciers and the drying of once-fertile soil in the country’s southern regions as evidence.

The chairman added that having access to uncontaminated air and water was not a privilege, but a fundamental human right.

Farhatullah Babar, president of the PPP Human Rights Cell; Senator Sherry Rehman, a former climate minister; Syeda Malaika Raza, general secretary of the Human Rights Cell; Syed Hassan Murtaza, general secretary of the PPP Punjab; Sibtul Hassan Bukhari, in charge of the PPP Central Secretariat; and Advocate Shakeel Abbasi, all attended the conference.
