Despite the fact that New Delhi has allowed the ambassador and mission staff appointed by the Western-backed government of ousted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to issue visas and handle trade matters, India does not recognise the Taliban government and closed its own embassy in Kabul after the Taliban took control in 2021.

The Afghan Embassy in India has reported that at least five diplomats had departed. According to one Afghan official, the Indian government will temporarily assume management of the embassy compound.

An Indian foreign ministry official in New Delhi who was asked about the developments said they were investigating the situation but would not provide any other information.

Officials from the Taliban in Kabul were unavailable for comment.

India is among a dozen nations that maintain a tiny mission in Kabul to promote commerce, aid, and healthcare in the region. Once worth $1.5 billion, bilateral trade between the two countries dropped precipitously when the Taliban administration assumed power in 2019.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Afghan college students who were still in India after their student visas had expired held a demonstration in New Delhi.
