Chief Justice Ameer Bhatti of the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order on Saturday directing the court’s diary branches to be open for business for the following two days. This is if any complainant approaches the court seeking redress for any difficulty or obstacle in the forthcoming general elections.

On Sunday, December 24, and Monday, December 25, both of which are closed holidays, Chief Justice Bhatti directed that the diary branches at the Principal Seat at Lahore and Multan would stay open as per office hours to hear petitions regarding the difficulties in submitting nomination papers.

The ruling specifies that the Principal Seat is the proper venue for petitions arising from comparable circumstances within the jurisdiction of the LHC Rawalpindi Bench and that the Multan Bench is the proper venue for cases about the Bahawalpur Bench.

Starting on December 20 and ending on December 22, nomination papers could be filed. Nevertheless, the deadline for submitting documents has been extended to Sunday (today) by the Pakistani Election Commission. The examination of the documents would commence on Monday and last until December 30.

Regarding a separate but connected issue, LHC Justice Ali Baqar Najafi ordered the Gujranwala RPO and the Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin DPOs to refrain from interfering with Qaisara Elahi’s (husband of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi) submission of nomination papers.

In her petition to the LHC, Qaisara Elahi expressed her displeasure that Punjab was preventing her husband Parvez Elahi, and son Moonis Elahi from completing the necessary paperwork to run for office in the upcoming February 8 elections from NA-69 and NA-64 as well as PP-64 and PP-32, respectively.
