ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued release orders for former foreign minister and Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The PTI leader had his appeal against his detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Act (3MPO) heard by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb.

The court ruled that the arrest was invalid and issued orders for his release once he signed an undertaking.

“Have a look at the undertaking submitted by [PTI leader] Ali Muhammad Khan yesterday,” the judge told Qureshi’s attorney, “you may submit one like that as well.”

The attorney said that he would speak with the former minister and then file the paperwork.

After Justice Aurangzeb ruled that the detention of PTI leaders Maleeka Bokhari and Ali Muhammad Khan under 3MPO was also unconstitutional on Wednesday, he issued orders for their release.

Despite court orders to stop, it appears that the crackdown on PTI leaders has continued unabated.

Party leader Shireen Mazari was arrested for the third time yesterday, while Senator Falak Naz, who was also held in connection with a case registered at the Tarnol police station in the federal capital, was released after appearing in court.

Maleeka Ali Bokhari, the head of the PTI, was recently released from Adiala Jail, but a PTI official stated she was immediately arrested again and brought to an unknown place.

Shehrayar Afridi’s wife is released from jail.

In a separate development, the IHC ordered the release of Rabia Shehrayar Afridi, the wife of PTI politician Shehrayar Afridi.

The police in Islamabad brought Rabia, who had also been detained under 3MPO, before Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir of the IHC. The IG of Islamabad was also present in court.

The IG told the court that she and her husband had been arrested because of allegations that they had attacked the GHQ in Rawalpindi, the center of the Pakistani military. He added that she was taken into custody under public order legislation.

The judge was shocked to learn, “She is a housewife!”

The IG responded by saying that police officers also treat women with respect.

“They have no respect for court orders,” Rabia’s attorney claimed.

“If an individual released by this court is arrested again, there will be serious consequences for that,” Justice Tahir said, warning IG Islamabad that the court will not take disobedience lightly.

The judge expressed his disappointment that “the same thing” had been witnessed under the previous administration.

“We have evidence against her having been involved in activities,” IG Islamabad replied. Housewives can be involved in more than just domestic concerns; they are also capable of murdering their husbands.

But the judge didn’t buy it and released her with a promise to appear in court.

Imran slams police actions

Leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has spoken out against the “illegal arrests and abduction” of PTI members and officials.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif pointed out on Wednesday that PTI Vice Chairperson Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Secretary General Asad Umar remained in jail “for more than a week now” via his official Twitter account.

That “despite court orders, journalist Imran Riaz Khan was not presented in court” with “confirmed” reports of torture against him was something he had claimed.

Imran had previously pushed for the “immediate release” of all female PTI leaders, workers, and family members, including wondering where Shehrayar Afridi’s wife had gotten herself locked up.
