I was offered the position of head coach for Pakistan by PCB: Azhar Mahmood
Ex-cricketer was willing to assume the position for one series against Afghanistan.

Azhar Mahmood, a former Pakistani cricketer, dispels rumors that he was turned down for the role of head coach for Pakistan’s series against Afghanistan and New Zealand. He affirmed that he couldn’t have committed to the national team while still playing for the Surrey County Cricket Club, and that the denial wasn’t on his part.

In an interview with a cricket website, Azhar said that he was the one who was unable to accept the offer for both series, but that he would be willing to accept the position for one against Afghanistan if the management of his county club gave their blessing.

“There were rumors that I turned down the head coach position for the Afghanistan series, but I actually accepted it because the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) contacted me and asked if I would be available for the two series as the team’s head coach. However, I declined because of my commitment to Surrey, so I decided to speak with Surrey first. I’m not sure whether they will let me work on the New Zealand series, but you know I can handle this one. Thus, they [PCB] said that it was acceptable if you only did one series. We need a person, and ultimately they chose someone else, which is perfectly OK, like they got someone to do both the series, “added Azhar.

Azhar speculates that PCB may not have comprehensive plans for coaching of any kind because they are all relatively series-specific and time-limited.

“There were just short-term, series-by-series strategies; there were no long-term ones. For me, since I have my own obligations and am still a member of Surrey and the season has already begun, “Finally, he said.
