A toddler of five and his older brother, then 17, were among the dead. Three other family members also suffered injuries and were sent to a local hospital for treatment.
Saeed Zaman and Aman were named as the victims.
The explosion was apparently set off by an IED buried in the fields, according to police sources.
In June 2021, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) highlighted their concerns over the death of children in a landmine explosion in South Waziristan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Landmines and other explosive leftovers of war should never be a threat to children, the statement read. To help children and families in crisis-stricken areas become more aware of the dangers posed by landmines and explosives, UNICEF will maintain its support for the Government of Pakistan’s mine risk education efforts. Both the ongoing clearance of minefields and the rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors are crucial.
