ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) revoked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) order requiring a recount of votes in six Karachi union councils (UCs).

In response to Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) plea to halt the recount, IHC Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan announced his ruling, noting that a full decision will include the reasons for overturning the electoral watchdog’s order.

In the courtroom were JI attorneys Qaiser Imam and Hasan Javed Shorosh, as well as ECP representatives and attorneys for other candidates.

JI Karachi’s Naib Ameer, Raja Arif Sultan, disputed the ECP’s judgement in a petition on March 22.

After receiving the appeal, the IHC postponed till the next hearing the ECP’s directives regarding the recount in Karachi’s six union councils.

The court subsequently sent notifications to the candidates for Karachi’s six union councils (UCs), suspending the recount in light of the notices.

The court had noted that before a judgement about re-voting is reached, candidates from the six UCs must be heard. The postponement of the recount has also been extended by the court until the next hearing on April 19.

It stated that if there was any proof of manipulation, ECP should have held new polls on the six union councils.

In five UCs in the west district and one in the east, JI alleged post-election manipulation and contested the recount. The court noted that it was on to the ECP to make sure elections were free and transparent.
