Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was detained on Thursday in connection with the violence that broke out as police attempted to detain the former premier while fending off large numbers of PTI supporters.
The pursuit of the former premier’s arrest in relation to the Toshkhana case was resumed by Islamabad Police on Wednesday morning, assisted by Punjab Police and Rangers. Due to Imran’s repeated attempts to avoid being charged, the judge issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for him.
But, PTI employees resisted them vehemently and hurled stones at them. Tear gas bursts were used by the police as a response.
Following hours of back and forth, which the foreign media referred to as “pitched fighting,” the personnel pulled back to Mall Road and emptied out.
Imran asked his fans to show up for true freedom in a brief video message as police prepared to arrest him. They believe that the country would slumber after my arrest, but you need to disprove them, he said.
The PTI chairman had warned that if the police “assaults” continued, “the problem will get out of everyone’s hands” the day after, in yet another video message. “I have no control over the throng outside,” he had stated.
The former prime minister was arrested on Thursday as part of a new first information report (FIR) filed at the Race Course police station. This FIR featured allegations related to riots and other offenses under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
According to the FIR, Imran ordered the commission of “severe crimes” by PTI leaders and hundreds of workers, and the party chairman and his colleagues have also been accused of criminal conspiracy.
The unauthorized assembly of armed individuals, refusing to answer a summons, obstructing justice, and harboring criminals are further clauses.
The Complaint also claimed that PTI workers injured 63 police officers, including DIG Islamabad, and caused problems for people while using petrol bombs and damaging state property.
