Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the “heinous” attack on his country on May 9 and promised that “the perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice.”

On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif continued his tirade against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by calling the incident on May 9 a “brazen attack on the State of Pakistan” with “sinister objectives.”

Shehbaz took to Twitter to assure his followers that “no rights violations take place” and to stress that “the culprits [of May 9] are being dealt with under the law.”

The prime minister stated that the PTI leader and his party were trying to destroy Pakistan’s “integrity” and “no country in the world would tolerate” such behavior.

Shehbaz pledged, “Pakistan fully respects and is committed to all its constitutional and international obligations on human rights [sic].”

Regarding May 9 and the events that followed, he denied allegations of human rights abuses and restrictions on the freedom to political protest. The prime minister has stated that such speech is “intended to manipulate and sway opinion-makers outside the country.” Shehbaz stated that any cases related to May 9 “will be dealt with due process under the law.”

The PTI leader’s arrest, which was deemed “illegal” by the Supreme Court two days later, sparked widespread unrest and riots across the country on May 9 and 10.

During the chaos, protesters shut down major roads all throughout the country and smashed through the gates of the military’s General Headquarters (GHQ) and the residence of the Lahore Corps Commander, Jinnah House.

Law enforcement officials opened fire on protests in some areas, prompting the government to retaliate by cutting off mobile internet connections and limiting public access to information.

Political instability and the shutdown of the internet both had a negative impact on Pakistan’s already struggling economy after the arrest.

Nearly all PTI leaders have since spoken out against the violence on May 9 and 10, saying that the military must be treated with reverence.

Many prominent PTI members have resigned from the party, often after being arrested multiple times and having to go through the legal system on multiple occasions. Many PTI members and sympathizers have also been detained, and some are even facing military trials.

Conflict between the federal government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), its supporters unified under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) banner, and the PTI has not yet subsided. Recent developments have also highlighted what appears to be a schism inside the court, adding to the country’s political unpredictability.
