ISLAMABAD: The United Nations sponsors International Mother Language Day, which is observed annually on February 21. (UN).

Since 2002, the day has been observed annually. This day has a theme associated with it every year. “Multilingual education – a must to transform education” is the theme for this year (2023).

This theme calls for a particular focus on the education and languages of indigenous people.

Experts from throughout the world concur that mother tongue is essential for a number of reasons. The mother tongue is important for children’s cognitive development as well as for adults’ rational thought and emotional stability.

Fluency in the original language, also referred to as the mother tongue, has many advantages for the child. His cultural connection is strengthened by it.

Because they are being taught in a language they do not completely comprehend, researchers are concerned that youngsters in the developing countries are learning very little in school. It is a practise that results in minimal or nonexistent information and skill acquisition, alienating experiences, high drop-out and repetition rates, and restricted or nonexistent learning.

Language policy must consider mother-tongue learning in order to raise the standard of education. A negative impact on children’s development may result from educational models that disregard the mother language throughout the early years.

At least in the early years, mother-tongue education can help teachers and students learn more efficiently. If you talk, people will listen,” Nelson Mandela famously said.
