Due to the above-average rainfall this year, the district administration of Rawalpindi has decided to extend the flood season by one month, from August 31 to September 30. This is to prevent potential damage to Nullah Leh and eleven other drainage channels.
The city and cantonment of Rawalpindi will have its flood contingency plan in effect. In the meantime, the army’s legendary 111 brigade will be standing by in case of any unforeseen emergencies related to the flooding. Meanwhile, until September 30th, inhabitants of low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant.
The flood monitoring control room, according to officials, has been enlarged. Five flood relief camps have been set up in the city at key locations. They’ll keep going ’til the rain stops falling. When regular classes begin on August 20, these camps will move into designated classrooms within the schools.
There will still be shelter, food, and medicine available in the flood relief sites. Female-only camps can be found on the campuses of New Katarian Women’s College, Dhok Rata Government Girls’ School, and Gawalmandi Women’s College, as well as at Islamia High School No. 1 on Murree Road.
The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB), the Municipal Corporation of Rawalpindi (MCR), and the Solid Waste Management Company (SWMC) have all been put on high alert.
Meanwhile, in response to rising worries about water drainage as a result of recent heavy rainfall, officials have made measures to improve water flow. The Nullah Leh and other rainwater drains will be thoroughly cleaned to fix any drainage difficulties that may arise.
At the same time, law enforcement has been tasked with keeping an eye out for and taking action against anyone they catch dumping construction debris down a storm drain.
