The chairman of the Senate seeks nominations for ‘political dialogue committee
In a letter to the government and the PTI, Sanjrani proposes the formation of a special committee to conduct negotiations.
ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the chairman of the Senate sent letters to the leader of the house and the leader of the opposition, asking them to designate members from the treasury and opposition benches to form a special committee for holding political discussion.
Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani wrote to Senator Ishaq Dar and Dr. Shahzad Waseem, asking them to each nominate four people to serve on the special committee. The deadline for nominations was set at two days.
Sanjrani argued that the Senate of Pakistan, House of Federation, is vested with the duty to safeguard national and political unity in the name of defending the national and public interest because it serves as a stabilising element in the federation.
To the PM readers: Amidst the increasing political crisis, Shehbaz contacts the head of the JI.
Given the current political and economic climate, he continued, “by accepting this responsibility and recognising that the Parliament is the right and only forum for the resolution of political issues,” a committee of senators from both parties was proposed to address the crisis, which would include holding general elections.
The House Speaker and the Opposition Leader will co-convene the 10-person special committee, which will include four representatives from each party.
The Senate secretariat will continue to be available to aid the committee in carrying out its duties to protect the democratic process and improve life in the state and for its citizens.
A few hours prior to the Supreme Court (SC) resuming hearing on the Punjab polls delay issue, the Senate chairman sent out his letters.
The Supreme Court last week threatened to enforce its order regarding the Punjab Assembly elections on May 14 if all political parties did not quickly reach a consensus on a date for holding simultaneous general elections of the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies.
The prime minister had previously remarked that the timing of elections was something that needed to be discussed in parliament and that the months of October and November were suitable for holding those elections.
