ISLAMABAD: Under what many referred to as a “sleight-of-hand” scheme, citizens will be “coaxed” into purchasing subsidised commodities during Ramadan by selling them at a lower price after they were recently made more expensive.

People will receive subsidies on recent price increases in goods under the Ramadan Relief Plan.

Ghee would receive a subsidy of Rs. 25 despite a price increase of Rs. 190 per kg, sugar will receive a subsidy of Rs. 11 following a price increase of Rs. 19 per kg, and flour will receive a subsidy of Rs. 27.12 following a price increase of Rs. 24.80 per kg, according to Utility Stores sources.

It is important to note that the Benazir Income Support Program recipients did not see a price increase (BISP).

Subsidies for flour and sugar have been drastically reduced this year as part of the Ramadan package. The subsidy has been reduced by Rs3.1 billion in total.

While the subsidy on flour has been cut by 350 million rupees, the subsidy on sugar has been decreased by 327 million rupees.

Beneficiaries of the BISP would receive discounts of Rs. 100 for ghee, Rs. 30 for sugar, and Rs. 51.92 for flour.
