After Justice Ayesha Malik, the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Mussarat Hilali took her oath as a Supreme Court judge on Friday in ISLAMABAD.

A number of judges from Pakistan’s highest court, including Justice Qazi Faez Isa and the attorney general and lawyers, were present when CJP Umar Ata Bandial swore in Justice Hilali.

With the swearing in of Justice Mussarat Hilali, the total number of Supreme Court justices now stands at 16.

After judge Qaiser Rashid Khan retired on March 31, Justice Hilali took the oath of office as the first female chief judge of the PHC on April 1.

From November 2001 until March 2004, she served as KP’s first female extra advocate general, and in April 2004, she became the province’s first female environmental protection tribunal chair.

For the Protection of Women from Harassment in the Workplace, she was the first woman to hold the position of ombudsperson.

Justice Mussarat Hilali, who was born on August 8, 1961, graduated from Khyber Law College at Peshawar University. In 1983, she became certified to practice before district courts, in 1988, she became certified to practice before the high court, and in 2006, she became certified to practice before the Supreme Court.

She served as the Peshawar Bar Association’s first female secretary in 1988, vice president in 1992 and 1994, and general secretary from 1997 to 1998.

For the years 2007–2008 and 2008–2009, she was the first woman to serve on the executive board of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

On March 26, 2013, she was promoted to the position of additional judge, and on March 13, 2014, she was confirmed as a permanent judge of the PHC.
