QUETTA: On Tuesday morning, two police officers escorting a polio team in the Nawan Killi neighbourhood of Quetta were killed when armed individuals opened fire on them, marking the latest attack on the country’s campaign to eradicate the crippling disease.

The Killi Shalam neighbourhood of the Nawan Killi, according to police sources. The polio volunteers, however, were unharmed in the attack, and the perpetrators of the crime were able to flee the scene without being stopped.

The bodies were taken to a public hospital as quickly as possible. After arriving, law enforcement officials began questioning witnesses and gathering evidence.

According to a senior health official who spoke with The Express Tribune, the polio campaign continued unabated despite the attack.

Balochistan’s anti-polio campaign officially began on Monday.

Polio workers are frequently the target of violent acts. In the Mastung region of Balochistan in the month of May, a police constable was slain while on security duties for polio vaccinations.

Two female polio workers were killed in January when an unknown assailant opened fire on a vaccination team in the Shalkot neighbourhood of Quetta.

At the same time, Pakistan is still one of the few nations affected by poliovirus. Balochistan’s health secretary, Saleh Muhammad Nasar, said earlier this year, “since January 2021 no polio case has been reported” in Balochistan, adding, “Our effort is to eradicate the virus once and for all.”

Since no cases had been documented in Baluchistan for over two years, Nasar argued that the country should be officially recognised as polio-free.
