On Sunday, voters in 24 districts throughout Sindh, including Karachi, went to the polls for local body (LB) by-elections.

There was no pause in the voting process from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are elections for 63 different types of seats, and 434 people have declared their candidature. There are a total of 11 UC chairman, vice chairman, and ward member positions up for election in Karachi Division.

The LB by-elections are being contested by candidates from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has chosen to abstain from voting.

For the by-elections, 449 polling locations and 1,586 voting booths were put up. In a race with zero ‘regular’ voting places, 292 were deemed highly sensitive and 157 were deemed sensitive.

While over seven thousand police officers were on election duty, CCTV cameras were also mounted in the most critical polling places.

There were a total of 690,295 voters, including both men and women.

Voting took place in UC 4 New Karachi, UC 6 North Nazimabad, and UC 13 New Karachi in the Central District, as well as in UC 2, UC 3 Shah Latif Town, and UC 8 Landhi in the Korangi District, all of which make up the Karachi Division.

One seat in Jacobabad, Kashmore, and Shikarpur all need by-elections. Whereas, Ghotki, Sukkur, and Khairpur all had elections for two seats,

It’s worth noting that 27 candidates have won their races without any opposition, and that for three local body seats, nobody has even filed nomination paperwork.
