Zelenskiy of Ukraine seems to corroborate Bakhmut’s death.
If confirmed, this would finish the bloodiest and most protracted fight of the war’s 15-month duration.
When questioned on Sunday if the city of Bakhmut was still under Ukrainian authority, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy gave what appeared to be a definitive “no.”
He answered, “I think no,” before a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden in Japan. “Bakhmut exists only in our hearts for now.”
If Russia’s claim that they’ve taken over the entire shattered city in eastern Ukraine is accurate, then the 15-month conflict’s longest and bloodiest combat is over.
Tragic, Zelenskiy remarked. Nothing beats this location, period.
Mercenaries led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, who claimed earlier in the day that his forces had driven the Ukrainians from the city’s last remaining built-up region, launched the attack that eventually demolished the city.
Prigozhin’s claim has previously been rejected by Kyiv.
