ISLAMABAD: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has reported that due to a shortage of natural gas, the government has instructed suppliers to halt supplying natural gas to business clients for three months during the winter. According to Khurram Ayub Khan, General Manager of Distribution SNGPL North, “Consumers should sign a new agreement with the firm for moving over to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is a better choice but will cost three times as much.”

He was addressing while on a visit to the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) with Rana Mudassar, the administrative officer, and Malik Nawaz, the deputy chief of business development. Khan emphasized that because Pakistan’s gas sources were diminishing, the country had to purchase some 1,200 million cubic feet of LNG per day to make up the difference. Natural gas deposits have been found in North Waziristan, but it would take time for them to reach consumers, he said.

He explained that while the government was giving home customers subsidies on LNG supplies, commercial consumers were not receiving any, and he gave the ICCI members his word that he would bring their concerns to the attention of the appropriate parties. Speaking at the gathering, ICCI President Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari disclosed that the notices for the suspension of natural gas connections from November 1, 2022 that SNGPL had sent to commercial customers in Islamabad had greatly alarmed the business community.
