Maddison receives a World Cup call-up from England.
Gallagher, Milson, and Maddison are members of England’s World Cup roster.

James Maddison’s stellar play for Leicester has earned him a call-up to the England World Cup team, as Gareth Southgate put his faith in a number of players who were out of shape or lacking in conditioning.

Despite doubts about their health, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City are included.

Harry Maguire, the captain of Manchester United, is also included despite being benched at the club level.

Maddison has only received one senior appearance, in 2019, and Southgate has previously passed her over.

The only player available to the England manager, though, who has more Premier League goals scored and assists than the Foxes midfielder in 2022 is Harry Kane.

Despite reservations about his defensive capabilities, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold will travel to Qatar due to the unavailability of Chelsea right-back Reece James.

Another unexpected choice in midfield is Conor Gallagher, who replaces James Ward-Prowse of Southampton.

Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham were passed over in favor of Callum Wilson to serve as Kane’s assistant.

On November 21, England takes on Iran to start their World Cup campaign. They next play the USA and Wales in Group B.

Total squad:

Goalkeepers: Nick Pope (Newcastle), Aaron Ramsdale, and Jordan Pickford from Everton (Arsenal)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Conor Coady (Everton), Luke Shaw (both Manchester United), and Harry Maguire

Midfielders: Kalvin Phillips, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Chelsea’s Mason Mount, and West Ham’s Declan Rice (Manchester City)

James Maddison of Leicester, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish of Manchester City, Harry Kane of Tottenham, Bukayo Saka of Arsenal, Raheem Sterling of Chelsea, Callum Wilson of Newcastle, and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United are among the forwards.
