China’s imports of sesame seeds increase by 50%.
Good prices and a free trade agreement encourage a rise in shipments.

According to data from the People’s Republic of China’s General Administration of Customs, Pakistan’s sesame seed exports to China increased by 50% year over year to $59.09 million in the first nine months of the current calendar year (GACC).

According to data obtained by Pakistan from the GACC, China imported 39,533.855 tonnes of sesame seeds for $59.09 million, an increase of 22% in volume from the same period the previous year when it imported 32,487 tonnes for $39.44 million.

The biggest month for sesame seed exports was January when Pakistan sent 26,658.61 tonnes to China for $39.89 million. September saw exports of 5,563.45 tonnes for $8.66 million.

According to Ghulam Qadir, Commercial Counsellor at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement and favourable market conditions in China have recently led to an increase in sesame seed exports.

In order to produce processed versions of this product and thus increase Pakistan’s exports to China and the rest of the world, he continued, “We will try to bring Chinese investors to Pakistan to help them set up factories having the latest technologies.”

The commercial adviser claimed that Pakistan’s government was offering numerous incentives to Chinese investors and added that the only way to lower Pakistan’s trade deficit and boost exports was through the transfer of technologies and the relocation or establishment of factories.

According to Ali Rizwan, an expert in agriculture, Pakistan’s government began introducing new crops, particularly in 2016.

The national oilseed enhancement programme, which assisted farmers in exporting their crops, was first introduced in Punjab and afterwards at the federal level. These are profitable crops that pay quickly.

“The Chinese market has two major benefits. The first is that prices are competitive with those on the domestic market. Second, because the market is so large, it is frequently quite difficult for one exporter to fill an order, the speaker said.
