Wednesday, November 23, has been designated as a national holiday in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in order to commemorate its monumental victory over the tournament favourites Argentina in a FIFA World Cup match that took place in Qatar.

According to a report that was published by Khaleej Times on Tuesday, it applies to all employees in both the public and private sectors, as well as all students in the country.

Unheralded Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the annals of World Cup history earlier today when they defeated Lionel Messi and Argentina by a score of 2-1. The victory was accomplished by a sensational comeback in the second half.

Messi, who is now 35 years old, scored a penalty in the tenth minute of his fifth and final attempt to win the one major prize that has eluded him. The goal came during a strong first half performance in which Messi and Lautaro Martinez also had three goals disallowed for offside.

But Saudi Arabia, the team with the second-lowest ranking in the competition after Ghana, decided to throw caution to the wind at the beginning of the second half and charged at Argentina’s defence in front of a frenzied crowd of 88,012 people.

Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, responded to the kingdom’s victory by tweeting, “What a game of football that was! Today, Saudi Arabia made history by pulling off the biggest upset in the history of the FIFA World Cup by defeating Argentina in a nail-biting match. Sincerest felicitations to HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia We wish our Saudi brothers and sisters the best of luck and share in their joy on this wonderful victory.

It is not the first time that a victory in the World Cup has resulted in the proclamation of a national holiday. The outstanding performance that Cameroon put on against Argentina in the opening match of the tournament in 1990, which is frequently referred to as one of the most shocking upsets in the history of football, also received similar reactions from the audience.
