An explosion that occurred early on Saturday morning at a block of flats on the island of Jersey, which is located off the coast of northern France, resulted in the deaths of three persons and the disappearance of approximately a dozen others.
At this time, I am sorry to say that we have suffered three fatalities,” Chief Officer Robin Smith of the States of Jersey Police stated during a news conference.
The fire was put out shortly after the incident, which took place soon before 0400 GMT. According to Smith, search and rescue operations would continue throughout the night in an effort to locate any survivors.
It was confirmed by him that the fire department was dispatched to the property on Friday evening, prior to the explosion, after residents had reported smelling gas coming from the building. He did not make any comments regarding the cause of the explosion, and he stated that it will be subject to investigation.
According to Smith, a structure that had three stories and was situated close to the harbour in the capital city of Saint Helier had entirely fallen.
He stated that twenty to thirty individuals had been taken to safety and that two persons who were “walking wounded” had been sent to the hospital for treatment.
