ECP is unable to remove Imran from his position as head of the PTI, according to the LHC. The high court directs the electoral watchdog to provide a response explaining its proceedings.
LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) attempted to remove Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan from his position as chairperson of the party on Thursday. However, the Lahore High Court (LHC) stopped them.
This move was made just one day after the former premier opposed the case brought forth by the election watchdog by filing a petition with the high court. After hearing Imran’s argument, the judge of the LHC, Justice Jawad Hassan, ruled that the commission cannot remove the former prime minister from his chairmanship.
In addition, the court requested a response about its proceedings from the ECP.
Yesterday, the leader of the PTI filed an appeal with the LHC challenging the actions taken by the ECP to remove him from his role as chairperson of the party in the wake of his disqualification in the Toshakhana issue.
In the case that he submitted to the high court, the former prime minister contended that the electoral watchdog was acting outside of its authority when it attempted to remove him as the chairperson of the PTI. In addition to this, it stated that the ECP had “illegally” issued the notice.
The lawsuit states that the commission began “illegal proceedings” against Imran; yet, the leader of the PTI had already disclosed all of his assets to the ECP before they began their investigation.
It made a request to the LHC that the notice that had been handed to Imran by the ECP be suspended, and it asked the LHC to prevent the electoral watchdog from taking any additional action before the final judgement.
