KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) said Friday that the moment a citizen goes missing, the appropriate authorities must file a case.

Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto presided over a two-person SHC bench that considered requests pertaining to the search for missing people.

Manzoor Ahmed, who vanished from the Steel Town region of Karachi, was reported back home by the petitioners’ attorney during the hearing. The court was also informed that while Ahmed was gone, cases had been filed against him. The application for Ahmed’s disappearance was then dismissed by the SHC.

Justice Phulpoto then ruled that the concerned police station must open a case right away following a citizen’s disappearance.

The court also instructed SHO Shah Latif to open an investigation into the disappearance of Mir Ali Haider and to order Haider’s quick return.

At a hearing for a petition seeking financial compensation for the forced disappearance of 12 persons the day before, SHC had instructed police and other authorities to present their progress reports within three weeks.

Some women sobbed in the courtroom during the hearing and said that they had been battling for their husbands’ return through the legal system for the previous ten years.

Justice Phulpoto stated that he felt nothing but sympathy for the missing people’s families.

The court had instructed the police and other authorities to “do whatever it takes to find the missing persons and bring them to the court.”
