Karachi’s Hyderi Market in North Nazimabad was the site of a large protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in opposition to the contentious digital census.

There were many workers and women in attendance, as well as the PTI Sindh and Karachi leadership.

Aftab Siddiqui, president of the PTI in Karachi, spoke to the crowd at the MQM-P stronghold and said that the party had started campaigning against the census as soon as the results were made public.

According to Siddiqui, the city of Karachi actually has a population of around 30 million people, but this number is being inflated for political and economic reasons.

He pointed out that, as the country’s most populous metropolis, Karachi should receive services that match the money it contributes to provincial and federal governments.

The leader of the PTI in Karachi has stated that the party will not accept the manipulated count because of the biased nature of the census. Senior PTI politician Firdous Shamim Naqvi has stated that an accurate census is an important issue because it would be used to delimit constituencies in the 2019 general elections.

Naqvi urged everyone to convey a signal that the tally should be precise.

Khurram Sher Zaman, the PTI’s parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly, said in his address that the party’s goal is to relocate Pakistani politician Imran Khan to the province of Sindh. Zaman stated that the 15-year reign of the Pakistan Peoples Party in the province has began its last countdown. This time, the PTI would not only govern in Punja and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, but also in Sindh.

Another critic of the census was Arsalan Taj, general secretary of the PTI in Karachi and a member of the provincial assembly. He claimed that the population of Karachi had been undercounted by 4% compared to the province total.
