On Saturday, Sheikh Nawaf passed away. When he became Amir in 2020, he was 83 years old. At that time, he was the oldest leader to take over in the Gulf state that Iraq attacked and took over in 1990.
He was sick for most of his three-year rule as Amir, which was short by Kuwaiti norms. He was ruled by his brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, for 14 years. He set the foreign policy of the Gulf state for two generations.
After prayers at Bilal bin Rabah mosque, Sheikh Nawaf was buried with his family at Sulaibikhat graveyard. His coffin was draped in Kuwait’s flag. He passed away at age 86.
Important people show respect
Important people from all over the world, like King Abdullah of Jordan and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, were going to visit Kuwait to pay their respects. The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, got to Kuwait in the afternoon.
The foreign minister of Iran, Hossein Amirabdollahian, was also going to send his sympathy on behalf of President Ebrahim Raisi.
Iran’s foreign ministry said that when he met with top Kuwaiti officials, he would stress how important it was for the two countries to improve their relationship.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, wished Kuwait’s new leader luck on X and said he would work with Sheikh Meshal to improve relations in the Gulf.
