KARACHI: In the final five days of the nomination period, 2,557 candidates from the seven districts of the Karachi division filed nomination papers for 22 seats in the National Assembly and 47 seats in the Sindh Assembly. The deadline for filing papers expired on Sunday.
Nomination papers have been submitted by a large number of political parties and independent candidates, such as Jamiat Ulema Islam, Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Three nomination forms were submitted by MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui from district central, and one nomination form was submitted by PML-N President and former prime minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif from district Keamari. Additionally, Mustafa Kamal, the Senior Deputy Convener of MQM-P, has submitted a nomination paper from Keamari.
PPP Chief Executive Bilawal Bhutto Zardari declined to run for office in Karachi. In 2018, he ran for office for the first time from the Lyari seat.
Following the conclusion of the nomination session, 69 Returning Officers from the Karachi division have issued Form 31.
In accordance with the aforementioned document, 93 candidates filed nomination papers for seats in the National Assembly, 246 for Sindh Assembly seats in the Malir district, 180 for seats in the National Assembly and 448 for Sindh Assembly seats in the East district, 119 for seats in the National Assembly and 238 for seats in the South, 116 for seats in the National Assembly and 257 for seats in the Sindh Assembly in Korangi, 146 for seats in the National Assembly, and 356 candidates for seats in the Central District. Additionally, 91 candidates filed nomination papers for National Assembly seats and 267 candidates for seats in the West district.
