Imran Khan will not be able to run in the forthcoming general elections in Lahore’s NA-122 or Mianwali’s PS 89 because the election tribunal affirmed the rejection of his nomination papers.
Appealing the rejection of PTI founder Imran Khan’s papers for NA-122, Justice Tariq Nadeem of the Lahore High Court’s election tribunal rejected the case.
When the tribunal heard that the candidate’s endorsement wasn’t a resident of the district, it affirmed the RO’s judgment.
Just like the RO’s objections, Imran’s appeal for NA-89 was dismissed by Judge Chaudhry Abdul Aziz.
Imran cannot run for office due to his conviction in the Toshakhana case, the tribunal said, stressing that the duration of a sentence is of no consequence until it is served.
Advocate Umair Niazi, who represented Imran, announced his intention to appeal the decisions to a higher court with a more expansive bench after they were announced.
Given Imran’s conviction in the Toshakhana case, the nomination papers were rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on December 30. The ECP emphasized that, given the current situation, he is unable to participate in elections so long as the conviction is upheld.
The tribunals are required to finish hearing appeals today and release an updated list of candidates by tomorrow, as per the ECP’s election schedule.
An earlier statement from an ECP official claimed that the withdrawal of nomination papers is slated on January 12 (Friday) and that the final list of candidates will also be revealed on the same day.
Voting will occur on February 8th, and candidates would be given their election insignia on January 13th (Saturday), according to the spokeswoman.
