LAHORE: In the matter of illegal recruitment, PTI President Chaudhry Pervez Elahi was granted bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday.
Elahi was arrested by the anti-corruption police on allegations that he had misused his position as chief minister of Punjab to unlawfully appoint a lower ranking person as his principal secretary.
Elahi’s attorney, Amir Saeed Rawn, requested that his client be placed on judicial remand following the conclusion of the investigation and stated that the police had no basis for detaining the PTI president.
The attorney also asked the court to grant Elahi’s bail. The law enforcement official, however, vehemently objected to the bail request and requested that the court reject the bail plea.
He continued by saying that there is enough evidence to establish the accused’s connection to the offence.
The official then claimed that CM Punjab Elahi had unlawfully appointed Muhammad Khan Bhatti, a lower rank officer, as his principal secretary without following the proper procedures.
In response, Elahi’s attorney informed the court that all proper procedures were followed in selecting the principal secretary and argued that his client was the target of a fabricated and fraudulent false complaint that was filed against him even though he had nothing to do with the case.
He continued by saying that Elahi was being victimised politically while Bhatti had been released from this matter.
Elahi’s attorney pleaded with the judge to provide him post-arrest bail.
The PTI president spent several months behind bars after being charged in multiple charges. Elahi was last detained in connection with terrorism shortly after being freed from an anti-terrorist court in relation to anomalies in the Lahore Master Plan 2050.
In addition, the former chief minister of Punjab was still detained in the May 9 judicial complex attack case, which came about after PTI founder Imran Khan was taken into custody by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case.
