PESHAWAR: PTI-Parliamentarians chief Pervez Khattak gave up both the party’s basic membership and chairmanship on Saturday, claiming health reasons, just days after declaring his plan to take a hiatus from politics.
After the vandalism incidents on May 9, 2023, and a government crackdown on Imran Khan’s PTI, Pervez Khattak left the previous ruling party.
He later lay the groundwork for the PTI-Parliamentarian movement, along with several other PTI defectors.
But in the general elections on February 8, the party suffered a crushing defeat, taking home just two seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (K-P) provincial assembly.
On February 12, a number of media sites announced the resignations of Khattak, JI chief Sirajul Haq, and IPP chief Jahangir Tareen.
On Saturday, however, it became known that Khattak had submitted his resignation to the central executive committee of the PTI-Parliamentarian, citing his health as the reason he was unable to carry out his duties within the party.
Mahmood Khan has been named the new chairman of the emerging party by the PTI-Parliamentarians, Ziaullah Bangash, the party’s secretary of communication. Khattak’s resignation was accepted by the party’s central executive committee.
He declared, “Mahmood Khan will soon take over and oversee the party’s operations.”
Khan was a member of the PTI prior to leaving the party following the severe crackdown that followed the previous coalition government’s tenure as chief minister of K-P from 2018 to 2023.
