ISTANBUL: According to local authorities on Tuesday, a fire that started during repair work at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, has left 29 people dead.
The Istanbul Governorship said in an official statement that the fire that broke out on the lower levels of a 16-story structure in the Besiktas neighborhood of the city claimed the lives of construction workers working at the nightclub.
Although the exact cause of the fire is yet unknown, the statement claimed that the renovation work was its first cause.
Following the notice, law enforcement quickly secured the area while firefighters, ambulances, and police arrived on the site.
With 31 trucks and 86 firefighters, the fire was swiftly put out and the situation was under control.
The statement further stated that “rescue teams are still working at the scene of the incident.”
