A local court in Karachi gave Sarim Burney to the Federal Investigations Agency (FIA) on Thursday for two days of physical remand. This comes after the activist was arrested on suspicion of being involved with human trafficking.
Investigation officer Chaudhary Bilal had earlier asked for the activist to be physically detained for 14 days so that proof could be gathered and any other people suspected of working with Burney could be caught.
The request was made by the IO before the accused was brought before Justice Khaleequ Zaman.
He was worried that if they didn’t do it, justice might not be done because there was a good chance that proof would be changed or destroyed if the FIA didn’t get custody of the accused.
But the physical remand was not extended, and the accused was only given to the FIA to hold for two days.
The court also ordered the FIA to make a report on how the case was going.
FIA says the famous social worker was arrested on charges of human trafficking, including illegally sending more than 25 children to the US to be adopted. This happened after American authorities filed a complaint against his Sarim Burney Welfare Trust for fraud and falsifying documents.
Because of these accusations, a probe into the social worker’s role in bringing children into the US illegally has begun.
A group of lawyers showed up at the FIA building to meet Burney.
Burney’s lawyers said that these charges against Burni were not true because of what he had done for society, but the request to drop the case against him was turned down.
The activist also shared and posted a video statement he made right before he left for Pakistan, where he was arrested when he got there.
The FIA’s Anti-Human Trafficking Team caught Burney at Karachi Airport on June 5.
The FIA said that they had been keeping an eye on Burney for a while before he was caught.
Sources said that the FIA wanted Burney because they thought he was involved in major crimes, such as trafficking people.
