As of the 1st of December, consumers in Pakistan will no longer be able to access the services offered by the Google Play Store since the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has decided to suspend the direct carrier billing (DCB) system.

Users will not be required to make use of their credit or debit cards in order to make use of the services, but the vast majority of users will not be able to download apps from the Google Play Store due to the limited credit card facilities.

Given that the step will result in complications for customers, the Telecom Ministry, the PTA, and cellular service companies have all addressed the SBP in an effort to get the step revoked.

The letter that the telcos sent to the SBP said the following: “It is pertinent to mention here that we all understand the prevailing challenge of worsening economic conditions of the country and thus are open to working in an amicable way with the Regulator (SBP); as we are already working with them in case of the telecom sector imports related transactions to navigate through these testing times,” the letter read. “It is pertinent to mention here that we all understand the prevailing challenge of worsening economic conditions
