400 people had purchased tickets to cross the bridge to observe the holidays of Diwali and Chhath Puja.

134 people have already died as a result of an Indian suspension bridge collapse, and authorities worry that figure may increase as a result of the opening of a criminal case into one of the deadliest tragedies to occur in the nation in the previous ten years.

When it fell on Sunday evening, the colonial-era footbridge across the Machhu River in the heart of Morbi town was crowded with tourists taking part in holiday celebrations, dropping victims approximately 10 meters (33 feet) into the river below.

Less than a week after the bridge’s reopening following refurbishment, 400 people had purchased tickets to cross it to celebrate the festivals of Diwali and Chhath Puja.

On Monday, video from the scene in the western state of Gujarat showed rescuers looking for victims in the river in inflatable boats.

“134 people have now died as a result of the bridge collapse tragedy. Operations for search and rescue are ongoing “NK Muchhar, a senior official, stated that the death toll would increase.

15 people were killed when a vehicle and passenger bus collided in central India.

Police have filed a criminal complaint against the unidentified individuals in charge of the bridge’s restoration, upkeep, and management. The bridge was being maintained by Gujarat-based electrical appliance manufacturer Oreva group, but a spokesman for the business did not return calls for comment.

A five-person panel has been assembled by the government to look into the catastrophe.

Reuter’s partner ANI was informed by a witness going by the name Raju that he observed individuals hanging from the bridge before they plunged into the river.

He claimed, “I brought a number of kids to the hospital.”

Former Gujarati chief minister and current prime minister Narendra Modi sent his sympathies to the families of the martyrs.
