ISTANBUL:
China-backed UN decisions on the disputed area of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and called for a peaceful solution to the problem on Tuesday.
“The Kashmir issue is a problem that India and Pakistan have had in the past,” said Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry.
Global Times, a newspaper based in Beijing, reports that Mao told reporters, “It should be solved peacefully based on the UN Charter, Security Council resolution and bilateral agreements.”
China said this after India’s highest court supported the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision in August 2019 to take away IIOJK’s special status and split the area into two more Union Territories that are controlled by the federal government.
