The Italian team looked at data from 221 people in the control group and 310 hospital patients, 89 of whom had a history of heart attacks.

According to the study, which was written up in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, pregnant women who have high cholesterol are more likely to develop atherosclerosis, a condition in which the arteries harden and cause a heart attack or stroke.
