ISLAMABAD: On Friday, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership was briefed that the economy was struggling but that the nation would not default.

The National Security Committee (NSC), the highest body for discussing national security and foreign affairs, received a briefing on this topic. The powerful NSC gathered in this location to talk about the connection with Afghanistan, the weak economy, and the escalating terrorism.

It was unusual for the NSC to talk about the situation of the economy right now. Since there were worries that Pakistan would go into default, the economic situation was briefed to the civil-military leadership. This week, the nation’s foreign reserves decreased to $5.8 billion, sparking fears of a possible default.

One attendee of the NSC meeting said, “We are in difficulty, but we are not defaulting.” The participant attested to the fact that the NSC received briefings on Afghanistan, the economy, and terrorism.

This was the NSC’s first meeting following the change in army command, and it occurred when Pakistan was dealing with a number of issues, such as declining foreign reserves and the resurgence of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to a statement released following the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over an important NSC meeting on Friday.

The meeting was attended by federal ministers, service chiefs, and heads of intelligence organisations.

The group went through the economy and law and order of the nation in great depth.

Ishaq Dar, the minister of finance, gave a presentation to the participants on the economic position and difficulties facing the nation as well as the economic policy and initiatives taken by the government.

The meeting was briefed by the intelligence services on the country’s overall law and order situation and told of the causes of the most recent wave of terrorism as well as the countermeasures.

The meeting was briefed on the situation in Afghanistan by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, who also discussed Pakistan’s relations with the Afghan interim administration.

The summit unambiguously said that no one would be permitted to undermine the crucial idea of national security or compromise Pakistan’s national interests. With enormous courage, constancy, and tenacity, the fundamental interests of Pakistan’s existence, security, and prosperity shall be protected.

The gathering also honoured the heroic acts of the heroes who died fighting terrorism, offered compassion and condolences to their families, and jointly prayed for the martyrs’ ranks to be raised. The NSC conference reiterated its resolve that terrorists are Pakistan’s foes.

The entire country shares a same narrative in the fight against terrorism and terrorists. Pakistan will respond with full force to anyone who challenges it, according to a statement.

On Monday, January 2, 2023, the NSC meeting will continue and new choices will be made in light of the ideas.
