ISLAMABAD: The federal government has initiated formal proceedings against the officers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for their alleged involvement in the leaking of information related to the tax returns of family members of the former army chief General (retd.) Qamar Javed Bajwa and has suspended several officers as a result of these allegations.

In the meantime, an investigation that will involve almost a dozen authorities at the level of chief commissioner has been launched.

The two officers who had previously been promoted to OSD and had their services transferred to the administrative pool of the FBR have now been placed on administrative leave.

In this regard, the FBR has issued a notification stating that two officers of grade 18, Atif Warraich and Zahoor Ahmed, have been suspended for a period of one hundred and twenty days each. It is important to point out at this juncture that both officers of grade 18 in the Inland Revenue were initially dismissed from their positions.

The tax information of General (retd.) Bajwa’s family was discovered to have been compromised a month ago. The image of the tax returns was obtained from the computer that belonged to the deputy commissioner.

According to our sources, the parameters of the investigation have been broadened, and we have launched our investigation with approximately a dozen officials who hold the rank of chief commissioner.

It has also been decided to include another three officials of the income tax in the inquiry and to carry out further probes with the chief commissioner, commissioner, and additional commissioner. These decisions were made after the investigation was already underway.
