JAMSHORO: Despite lower prices for petrol and diesel, the transporters have not lowered costs, and to further aggravate the situation for commuters, they are raising fares for all routes in Sindh during the holiday season.
On Sunday, commuters in Jamshoro blocked the Indus Highway in protest against the transporters’ excessive rates.
The passengers’ protest resulted in hours-long closures of all public transit on both sides of the Indus Highway.
They insisted that the district government and Sindh Transport take measures to stop public transporters from overcharging. A few hours later, they softly scattered. Meanwhile, RTA Secretary Hyderabad Region Salim Memon resumed his campaign against carriers in Hyderabad that were charging passengers more on Sunday for the third day in a row, following the orders of Deputy Commissioner Tariq Qureshi.
On the third day, Secretary Salim Memon conducted an action by stopping 45 passenger vehicles travelling from Karachi to Hyderabad and asking the passengers about the cost they were charged. Transporters that charged passengers more than the agreed-upon fares were fined Rs. 11,000, while the passengers received a refund of Rs. 73,000.
RTA Secretary Salim Memon stated in his statement that stern action has been taken and the extra fare has been reimbursed to the customers since certain carriers are charging the public Rs. 1,000 for fares on holidays.
