ISLAMABAD: On Friday, Pakistan and Italy decided to sign a memorandum to strengthen their cooperative efforts to stop Pakistanis from entering Italy illegally.

Bilateral ties and topics of mutual interest were reviewed at a meeting held at the Ministry of Interior by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Italian Ambassador Mirelena Armellini.

The interior minister gave the relevant authorities instructions to complete the deal as soon as possible.

The interior minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to fight human trafficking and declared that mafias involved in human smuggling have been subject to a zero-tolerance policy.

He emphasized that individuals engaged in human trafficking would incur financial penalties in addition to jail time. He added that skilled people from Pakistan would be transported to Italy via authorized routes to contribute to the remittances.

The Italian Ambassador pledged full cooperation in this area and expressed appreciation for the interior minister’s efforts to combat human trafficking.

During the conference, the idea to designate Islamabad and Milan as sister cities was also covered.
Europe is a major destination for the Pakistani diaspora, with up to 2.2 million Pakistanis residing there. Italy is home to about 120,000 Pakistanis, according to the Ministry of Labor in Italy and a recent assessment on the country’s immigrant population.

A number of intersecting factors drove the need to migrate, as indicated by previous research by MMC based on interviews with Pakistani arrivals in Italy between November 2019 and September 2021. Many (48%) cited multiple reasons for their migration, with the most common ones being violence, insecurity, and conflict (54%) followed by a lack of rights and freedom (36%), and economic reasons (33%)
