Throughout the course of the year, numerous public celebrities and politicians were spotted seeking respite in the hallways of various courts.
LAHORE: In 2022, politicians and famous people continued to be involved in legal disputes. They frequently visited the courtrooms in search of relief, which they were eventually able to obtain after much effort and litigation.
Courts continued to be the location of remarkable decisions, moulding and changing the important developments. Throughout the year, politicians accused of corruption, money laundering, vandalism, and other offences could be seen in the courtroom hallways.
The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) money laundering case against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz ended with their acquittal, and the Ramzan Sugar Mills reference against them was forwarded to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Rana Sanaullah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was granted bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC) after he continued to show up in court for the narcotics case.
Usman Buzdar, the former chief minister of Punjab, too made an appearance in court due to NAB proceedings against him. Chaudhry Moonis Elahi appeared before the court for bail in a money laundering case. He was granted bail as well following the spectacular arrest of the former deputy speaker of Punjab.
However, Sheikh Rasheed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), has filed a complaint with the high court over corruption. Yasmin Rashid, Murad Ras, Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed, Mian Aslam Iqbal, and other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) officials appeared in court to request bail in the May 25 riot cases.
Separately, to avoid being arrested in connection with the Punjab Assembly riot charges, Atta Tarar, Rana Mashhood, Bilal Farooq Tarar, Owais Leghari, and other MPs of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had to knock on the court’s doors.
The NAB’s investigations into the Chaudhary brothers were likewise closed. Additionally, Maryam Nawaz, vice president of the PML-N, received her passport back in the end.
A local court also exonerated television personalities Saba Qamar and Bilal Saeed in the video shoot case that was brought against them. However, Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi’s legal dispute is still ongoing.
