ISLAMABAD: According to Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan’s presidency of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt under which the “Loss and Damage” fund was established was a great accomplishment.

The foreign minister claimed that it was a goal for which environmentalists had been fighting for the previous 30 years, and he expressed pride that it had been reached while Pakistan had the G77 presidency.

The foreign minister claimed in an interview with the Arab News that he thought the language used in “loss and harm” had helped them find some common ground.

The foreign minister claimed that the developing world believed its carbon footprint was lower and that it had not contributed as much to the catastrophe as the industrialised world.
“That is precisely the G77 objective or aspiration. The foreign minister stated, “We stand for the ambitions of the developing world.

He said, “I think we were extremely successful in forging that consensus,” saying the “Loss and Damage” fund was an example of how developing nations should unite for a common goal.

According to the foreign minister, the G77 had gathered to make decisions by consensus and agreement. The outcomes of every meeting he presided over were documented.
“I tend to think that there are many more things that bring us together than separate us.

And rather than looking for areas where we disagree, we should look for areas of agreement, the foreign minister advised.

“We need to look at this, not simply as the developed world needing to offer compensation or reparations to the poor world,” he continued. “We have to work together.”

The need for cooperation between the global north and south was emphasised by Foreign Minister Bilawal.

The foreign minister was quoted by the Arab News as saying, “Climate catastrophe does not care if you are affluent or poor, whether you contributed to climate change or not.”

Everywhere we turn, climatic catastrophes are catching up with us, and we must cooperate to address this problem, he continued.
