The chief organizer of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Maryam Nawaz, has denied rumors that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is leaving politics, saying the rumors are untrue.
Maryam wrote on X, “If rejecting the prime minister’s stance, it could give the appearance that Nawaz Sharif is stepping down from the political scene. That assertion is untrue.”
She claimed that over the next five years, the leader of the PML-N would not only like to be involved in politics but also oversee matters of government in Punjab and at the Centre.
She gave the explanation that Nawaz chose not to run for prime minister, citing the PML-N’s distinct majority during his father’s three stints in office.
“Nawaz even declared in his rallies prior to the elections that he would not join a coalition administration. “Those who are acquainted with Nawaz Sharif’s beliefs would comprehend his position,” she continued.
She added, “Shehbaz Sharif and I are his soldiers, obligated by his decree. He will provide us with direction and oversight while we work. May Allah bless us with prosperity. Ameen.
The PM [will be] Nawaz Sharif is the mantra that the PML-N and its leaders have been repeating for years. The party even predicted Nawaz to be the next prime minister in the event that the PML-N won power, both during the election campaign and when Shehbaz was prime minister.
But it appears that the divided mandate and the last-minute changes left him with no choice but to suggest his brother and take on a new responsibility: that of suggesting individuals for important posts.
Marriyum Aurangzeb, a PML-N spokesman, told The Express Tribune that “Nawaz Sharif will assist both Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz in their jobs.”
In response to a question about whether the imprisoned PTI founding chairman Imran Khan had effectively ended Nawaz’s political career by pressuring him to alter his plans after observing the split mandate in the polls, Marriyum disputed the claim, stating that Nawaz is still the one nominating candidates for the most important and powerful positions in the nation.
Marriyum responded, “Nawaz Sharif is very much playing on the front foot,” when asked if he would keep fulfilling his political role covertly.
Social media was ablaze with inquiries about whether Nawaz’s political career had finally come to an end shortly after the PML-N announced that Shehbaz and Maryam would head the federal and Punjabi governments. In response to the inquiry regarding Nawaz’s potential aspirations for the presidency, Marriyum responded negatively.
