Pakistan and Afghanistan have formed a “high-level” committee to investigate the incident in Chaman.
Kabul has voiced its worry and hopes that those responsible will be brought to justice.

PESHAWAR — On Wednesday, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to form a high-level committee to investigate the deaths of Pakistani security personnel at the Spin Boldak checkpoint in Chaman.

On Sunday, an armed Afghan reportedly crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, where he opened fire on security troops, killing one and wounding two. This caused the closure of the Chaman border, also known as Friendship Gate, which connects the provinces of Balochistan and Kandahar.

Kabul has voiced worry over the casualties after the incident.

The Express Tribune was told by reliable Kabul sources that Afghanistan has launched an investigation into the event and hoped to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan labelled the tragedy unfortunate and reportedly ordered a high level delegation to study the incident and find the perpetrator.

The criminal is still at large.

Unprovoked Afghani gunfire has escalated tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which kept the border closed on Monday for a second day in a row.

The incident was followed by hours-long shooting between Pakistani and Afghan border soldiers, triggering the closing of the crucial commerce crossing between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Pakistan tightened up security measures in the aftermath of the fire incident as the border remained closed and all pedestrians’ movement and business activity were suspended.

“The border was blocked after the unpleasant occurrence,” Abdul Hameed Zehri, Deputy Commissioner Chaman, informed The Express Tribune via telephone. He stated security has been enhanced in the aftermath of the firing incident at the border.

Border problems were discussed at a flag conference between Pakistani and Afghan authorities.

There has been no movement toward the reopening of the border.
