In response to General Assembly Resolution 76/254, which declared March 15th as the International Day to combat Islamophobia, Pakistan presented the resolution on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The increasing frequency of incidents of desecration of the Holy Quran, attacks on mosques, sites, and shrines, as well as other acts of religious intolerance, negative stereotyping, hatred, and violence against Muslims, has led the General Assembly to denounce the incitement of discrimination, hostility, or violence against Muslims.

In order to counteract hate crimes, incitement to violence, violence against Muslims, and religious intolerance, the General Assembly has also urged the Member States to enact laws and implement policy measures.

The General Assembly’s request for the creation of a “United Nations Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia” was warmly received in Pakistan. This historic appointment, which is solely devoted to eradicating Islamophobia, will be the first of its kind.

The resolution’s passage comes at a crucial moment, as seen by the rise in Islamophobia, which is seen in the number of instances of violence, instigation, and discrimination against Muslims worldwide.
