In filmmaking, the Director of Photography is not simply a crew member — they are a leading creative authority whose vision determines how a film is ultimately experienced. Every camera movement, every quality of light, every choice in framing is part of the DP’s authorship. In this leadership role, Shahan Rao has built a reputation as one of the most distinctive and internationally recognized voices behind the camera.

Rao’s perspective is both global and deeply personal. Having worked in seven countries and collaborated with more than 25 directors, he brings a rare blend of cultural fluency and narrative sensitivity. His formative years in Pakistan during a golden era of documentary filmmaking — combined with his early career in photography — forged an ability to capture both unfiltered human truth and sweeping cinematic beauty.

With over 40 films to his credit — including The Jazz Pianist, Pieces of Two, 40 Days, Generation Wells, Seoalan, Strong Black Women, Panthers Club, and the award-winning The Choice — Rao has consistently shaped the tone, rhythm, and emotional heartbeat of stories that have resonated with audiences worldwide.
Award-Winning Work Across Prestigious Platforms
Rao’s cinematography has not only elevated the films he’s worked on but has been celebrated on the world stage:
• The Choice — Earned Best Cinematographer for Rao, with its emotionally charged visuals and poetic interplay of light and shadow praised by festival juries.

• Pieces of Two — A deeply intimate story enhanced by Rao’s dreamlike, painterly style, officially selected at Toronto Lift-Off Film Festival, Indie Shorts Fest (Los Angeles), Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema, Venice Shorts, and Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival — an Academy Awards-qualifying event.
• Generation Wells — Winner of Best Film at Indie Short Fest, Best Picture nominee at the Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying LA Shorts International Film Festival, and honored at the SoCal Film Awards, The International Indie Film & Screenplay Festival, Oniros Film Awards – New York, and Tietê International Film Awards, where Rao is in contention for Best Cinematographer.
• Nebuchadnezzar — Spotlight feature at the Julian Dubuque International Film Festival and nominee at the Yorkton Film Festival.

Leadership at the Highest Level
On set, Rao is far more than a technical expert — he is the visual architect, shaping the creative DNA of each project in close partnership with the director. His ability to unite large teams under a single artistic vision has made him indispensable to productions with ambitious creative goals.
His recent feature 40 Days with Media Avenue Studios secured international distribution before post-production even wrapped — a rare testament to both the project’s and Rao’s creative power. He is also in discussions with the studio for their second comedy feature, Falafel, a follow-up to Husband for Sale. His upcoming work includes Ghost Machine, a high-profile collaboration with filmmaker Tony Schwartz.
In an industry where the DP’s influence determines not just how a film looks but how it is felt, Shahan Rao stands as a once-in-a-generation talent. His work doesn’t just light a scene — it defines a legacy.
