Sikhs arrange iftar for fasting Muslims.
Throughout the course of the month, Sikh families take turns hosting an iftar meal for Muslims.
PESHAWAR: The Sikh community there continues to organize iftari for the less fortunate.
In the Sikh religion, feeding the hungry is seen as a duty. The Sikh community in Peshawar frequently provides free food to those in need, but during the holy month of Ramazan, special arrangements are made for iftari.
These “distarkhwans” work throughout the month because various Sikh households in the walled city’s Mohalla Jogan Shah neighborhood take turns setting it up.
Along with giving money to the less fortunate, Sikh business owners are well recognized for advertising special discounts in their stores throughout Ramadan. Sikhs congregating around long plastic mats spread to give food to residents who are fasting in locations like the Bolton Block of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) is an odd but enjoyable experience for regular people.
According to Jatinder Singh, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter leader of the National Peace Council for Interfaith Harmony, “this year within four days of Ramazan, we donated food items among 100 worthy (Muslim) families.” According to Jatinder, we are now organizing an iftari for which Sikh youth have volunteered and donated food packages.
According to him, each ration box includes necessities like cooking oil, grains, lentils, chickpeas, beans, sugar, and tea.
