ISLAMABAD: The US on Sunday issued a security alert warning about a potential terrorist assault against American citizens at a posh hotel in the nation’s capital, days after a suicide bombing in Islamabad.

The US Embassy in Islamabad issued a statement saying that due to the possibility of an attack, US government employees were not allowed to visit the private hotel in the federal capital.

According to the statement, the US administration is aware of reports that unknown people may be planning to assault Americans at the exclusive hotel in Islamabad “sometime during the holidays.”

According to the caution posted on the US embassy website, the Islamabad embassy forbade all American workers from going to the hotel as of right away.

The message said, “Furthermore, as Islamabad has been placed on a Red Alert citing security concerns while banning any public gatherings, the embassy is encouraging all Mission staff to refrain from non-essential, unauthorised travel in Islamabad throughout the holiday season.”

On September 20, 2008, a dumper truck packed with explosives exploded in front of a private hotel in Islamabad’s red zone, killing at least 54 people and injuring many more.

The bombing rocked Pakistan since the terrorists were able to breach the perimeter protection of the red zone, which is home to important government buildings and diplomatic offices.

The US issued an unprecedented advisory and threat alert after a police official was killed and several people were injured when a suicide bomber detonated himself during a check-up in Islamabad’s I-10 area.

Terrorist assaults have increased since the Afghan Taliban retook control of Kabul.
